JD(U) Supports Simultaneous Elections Proposal
Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has expressed strong support for the Union Cabinet's decision to adopt recommendations for 'One Nation, One Election', which aims to conduct simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. JD(U) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad emphasized the initiative's potential to reduce election frequency, lower public expenditure, and foster policy continuity, aligning with the BJP's long-standing agenda since 2014. Despite the backing from JD(U) and other BJP allies like the Lok Janshakti Party, the proposal faces significant opposition from various political factions, who argue it undermines democratic processes. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has called for comprehensive discussions to build consensus on the issue. The initiative was previously recommended by a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, highlighting its perceived benefits for governance and development in India.
