Record 3,906 Council Officials Now Earn Over £100K

The TaxPayers' Alliance has released its annual Town Hall Rich List, revealing a record number of local government officials earning six-figure salaries in the UK. In 2023-24, a total of 3,906 officials received more than £100,000, which is a 25% increase from the previous year, while those earning over £150,000 rose by 32% to 1,092. Notably, 262 council chiefs earned over £200,000, marking a 50% increase, with some receiving substantial golden goodbyes or bonuses. Despite these high salaries, many councils have implemented significant council tax hikes, leading to public discontent as families struggle with rising costs. The report highlights stark contrasts between escalating executive pay and the slashing of local services, aggravating concerns over financial accountability in local government. Council representatives argue that salaries reflect the responsibilities of these roles, emphasizing transparency in salary disclosures.
