LA City Council Declares June 20 Cheech Marin Day

The Los Angeles City Council proclaimed June 20 as "Cheech Marin Day" to honor the celebrated Chicano comedian, actor, and art collector. This proclamation coincides with the third anniversary of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in Riverside, the first North American museum dedicated exclusively to Mexican American and Chicano art, which houses over 700 pieces from Marin's personal collection. Marin, famed for his comedy duo Cheech & Chong and his roles in films like "Born in East LA" and Robert Rodriguez's works, has also been a national leader in promoting Chicano art and culture. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez led the resolution to honor Marin, emphasizing Marin's enduring cultural impact and community dedication. Marin reflected on the relevance of his 1987 film "Born in East LA," highlighting its ongoing social commentary amid contemporary issues. The event celebrated Marin's contributions to entertainment and advocacy for the Latino and Chicano communities.
