Seabound Wins £1.1M UK Grant for Southampton Port Carbon Capture

Seabound, a London-based marine carbon capture company, has received a £1.1 million grant from the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC6) to develop and deploy integrated carbon and emissions capture technology at the Port of Southampton. In collaboration with STAX Engineering and Associated British Ports (ABP), the project aims to combine Seabound’s modular carbon capture units with STAX’s emissions control system, offering a scalable solution to capture CO₂ and pollutants like sulfur and nitrogen oxides directly from docked vessels without requiring costly vessel retrofits or new infrastructure. This initiative represents the first full commercial-scale deployment of combined carbon and air pollution capture technology at a UK port and seeks to provide a replicable model for other ports globally. The project is supported by ABP’s Energy Ventures Accelerator program and is expected to generate skilled jobs related to barge operations, maintenance, and carbon capture servicing. The integrated approach offers an alternative to shore power by addressing challenges such as high capital costs, limited vessel compatibility, and slow infrastructure rollout. Seabound’s prior successful demonstrations, including an 80% CO₂ capture efficiency on ships, and strong investor backing underscore the potential of this technology to advance maritime decarbonization and improve air quality in port communities.
