The European Union has announced a R628 million ($35 million) grant to support South Africa's green hydrogen initiatives, aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing the country's energy transition. This funding includes R490 million dedicated to developing the green hydrogen value chain and R138 million for the state-owned logistics company Transnet to facilitate its green transformation. The grants are expected to attract up to R10 billion in additional public and private investment and support feasibility studies for low-carbon hydrogen production and storage. South Africa, heavily reliant on coal, sees this funding as a means to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and significantly reduce carbon emissions. European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson emphasized that this collaboration exemplifies the importance of international partnerships in addressing climate change and advancing sustainable energy solutions. The funding is part of a broader EU strategy to secure green hydrogen supplies and support decarbonization efforts in both South Africa and Europe.
