Pegula stated that she was not feeling 'comfortable moving on court' and her injury worsened after her opening loss to Coco Gauff and a subsequent defeat to Barbora Krejcikova. Swiatek, who also lost her opening match, needs to win against Kasatkina to secure her place in the semifinals. This marks a disappointing end to Pegula's campaign, having previously reached the finals in the tournament last year. Kasatkina will compete in the WTA Finals for the second time, hoping for a better outcome than her debut in 2022.
