Nick Griggs Sets Unofficial Parkrun Record

Nick Griggs, a 19-year-old runner from Ireland, set a new unofficial parkrun world best time of 13 minutes and 44 seconds at Victoria Park in Belfast, breaking the previous record held by British Olympian Andy Butchart by one second. Despite parkrun's policy of not recognizing times as world records, Griggs' achievement has drawn significant attention, especially as it follows his successful performances in European competitions. He also holds the women’s record at the same venue, set by fellow Irish runner Ciara Mageean at 15:13 last December. Griggs had not aimed for the record during the run; rather, he saw it as a fitness test ahead of upcoming championships. The parkrun organization emphasizes inclusivity, having previously removed comparative statistics to promote participation over competition. Griggs, who has set multiple personal bests this year, continues to be a strong contender in distance running despite narrowly missing Olympic qualification for Paris 2024.
