Nokia Boldyn Deploy Private 5G Network At Finland Callio Mine For Deep Underground Connectivity
Nokia and Boldyn Networks have deployed a private 5G network at the Callio FutureMINE site in Pyhäjärvi, Finland, a former copper mine and one of Europe's deepest, now used as a real-world testbed for mining technology innovation. The network, based on Nokia's Modular Private Wireless and Boldyn's private 5G solution, provides reliable, high-bandwidth, ultra-low latency connectivity across multiple underground levels and tunnels extending up to 1.5 kilometers deep. This infrastructure enables remote operation of autonomous vehicles, replaces traditional walkie-talkie systems with advanced voice communication, and supports real-time 3D mapping and digital twin technology for monitoring mine assets and personnel. The system enhances safety by ensuring every person and asset is visible and protected, while also improving operational efficiency by reducing downtime and risk from manual processes. Callio's managing director highlighted the network's role in transforming the site into a world-class testbed for next-generation automation and safety solutions. Nokia emphasized that private 5G is especially suited to meet the extreme connectivity challenges in mining environments, with competitors like Ericsson and Huawei also pursuing opportunities in this sector.
