Chevron Begins Seabed Survey for Cyprus-Egypt Gas Pipeline

Chevron is set to commence a seabed survey in the eastern Mediterranean this summer as part of preparations for a pipeline that will connect the Aphrodite natural gas field in Cyprus to processing facilities in Egypt. This project, a collaboration between Chevron, Shell, and NewMed Energy, is aimed at transporting an estimated 4.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to enhance energy supply for neighboring countries and the European Union. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the project's significance during discussions with Chevron CEO Mike Wirth in Houston, highlighting its role in positioning Cyprus as a vital energy supplier. The development follows a framework agreement signed with Egypt, which lays the groundwork for commercial operations of the gas field. Chevron's operations in the region highlight its strategic focus on the eastern Mediterranean, where it is currently the only U.S.-based energy company. The Cypriot government considers the Aphrodite project a top priority, reinforcing the importance of regional energy security.
