The U.S. military has deployed approximately 130 soldiers and advanced missile systems to Shemya Island in Alaska's Aleutian chain, responding to increased Russian military activity in the region, including eight aircraft and four naval vessels recently detected near U.S. territory. This deployment coincides with joint military exercises between Russia and China, dubbed 'Ocean-24,' which began on September 10. Despite the heightened activity, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated there is no immediate cause for alarm, as these incursions have been monitored for years. The soldiers arrived on September 12 as part of a 'force projection operation,' reinforcing the strategic importance of Shemya Island, which hosts a historical U.S. Air Force station. Senator Dan Sullivan also indicated that additional naval assets, including a guided missile destroyer and a Coast Guard vessel, were sent to the area. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has been actively tracking the recent Russian maneuvers within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone.
