FS Group's €1B Rail Expansion to Challenge Eurostar

FS Italiane Group, a major Italian rail operator, plans to launch a high-speed service from London to Paris by 2029, investing €1 billion to challenge Eurostar’s monopoly and increase competition. The UK high-speed rail network is set to expand, potentially adding up to five new European destinations to accommodate a projected tripling of international passenger demand, from 11 million to 35 million annually. This growth is supported by financial incentives for new operators on the HS1 line, which currently operates at only 50% capacity. FS Group's initiative is part of a broader strategy to build a more integrated and sustainable European rail network, with partnerships and regulatory support including a memorandum with Spanish operator Evolyn and access to the Eurostar maintenance depot. The move aims to offer an environmentally friendly alternative to air travel, enhancing cross-channel rail service options.
