Johnny Gioeli Sues Sega Over Song Rights

Johnny Gioeli, the vocalist of Crush 40, is suing Sega of America over the rights to the song 'Live & Learn,' featured in Sonic Adventure 2. Gioeli claims he composed and recorded the song without Sega's involvement and asserts that the company only has rights to the lyrics, not the master recording or musical composition. He alleges that Sega has improperly licensed the song for at least 25 different games and media over the years, leading to significant unpaid royalties. The lawsuit seeks clarification on ownership and damages amounting to $500,000 for breach of contract and another $500,000 in restitution. Gioeli, who has maintained his songwriting registration for over 20 years, acknowledges the possibility of joint ownership but insists that Sega's claims to full control are unfounded. He hopes for a peaceful resolution, valuing the long-standing relationship with Sega despite the legal dispute.
