Great White Sharks Confirmed Off Massachusetts, New York Shores
The first great white shark of the season has been confirmed in New England waters near Nantucket, Massachusetts, where a seal was found dead after being bitten by a shark, according to the New England Aquarium. Scientist John Chisholm emphasized that this time of year marks the return of great white sharks to inshore waters for hunting seals and other prey, urging the public to be 'shark smart' by avoiding areas with seals or schools of fish and staying close to shore. Sightings can be reported through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity app, where verified sightings are posted. Meanwhile, drone footage captured a great white shark swimming close to shore off Montauk, New York, marking one of the earliest and closest seasonal sightings recorded in the area. The presence of these sharks before lifeguards are on duty highlights the importance of public awareness and caution as the summer season begins. Great white sharks can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh over 4,000 pounds, and while attacks on humans are rare, experts advise vigilance during this period.
