Initiatives Launch to Address Elephant Conflicts

Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire has pledged to expand electric fencing in Jhapa district to mitigate the elephant menace that has significantly impacted local residents and properties. He acknowledged the need for additional budget to enhance these initiatives. In a separate conservation effort, Assam's forest department has successfully outfitted an elephant with a radio collar to track movements and manage human-elephant conflicts, utilizing advanced GPS technology. Ecologist T.N.C. Vidya emphasized the importance of studying elephant social dynamics and the adverse effects of habitat destruction on their societies. Additionally, the forest department in Madikeri, Karnataka, is actively transporting students to school in department vehicles to protect them from roaming elephants, as local communities face ongoing threats from these animals. Collectively, these initiatives highlight the need for effective management strategies to address human-elephant interactions across different regions.
