Samia Wins Nearly 98% Amid Violent Unrest

President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of Tanzania’s presidential election with about 97.66–98% of the vote and reported turnout near 87%, and a quick swearing‑in was expected. Major opposition parties — notably CHADEMA and ACT‑Wazalendo — were barred or disqualified and several opposition figures faced charges, leaving only minor challengers. Election day and the following days saw widespread protests, violent clashes, a nationwide internet shutdown and a curfew; opposition groups allege hundreds killed (CHADEMA cited about 700), while the government denies excessive force. Human rights organizations and international observers reported arrests, enforced disappearances, abductions, restrictions on journalists and obstacles to credible observation, and European officials said the vote was not free or fair. The UN has called for an impartial investigation and international concern is growing. Hassan, 65, who became president after John Magufuli’s death in 2021 and leads the ruling CCM party, will begin another five‑year term amid deep domestic unrest and international scrutiny.
