San Diego Officer Dies After DUI Arrest

Lawrence Orso, a 46-year-old San Diego police officer, died shortly after being released from the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Riverside County, where he had been held on suspicion of DUI. Found unresponsive in the parking lot just before 10 a.m. on Saturday, Orso was pronounced dead at the scene, with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department stating there was no evidence of foul play. Orso had been arrested by California Highway Patrol around 2:19 a.m. and booked into the jail around 6:42 a.m., before being released with a citation at 8:26 a.m. San Diego police Acting Lt. Travis Easter confirmed that Orso suffered a medical emergency, and the department is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Orso, a 15-year veteran of the SDPD, worked in the Mid-City and Northeastern divisions, and his family is being supported during this difficult time.
