Melbourne Sacks Simon Goodwin; Chaplin Interim Coach

Melbourne Football Club has sacked coach Simon Goodwin, just four years after he led the team to a historic 2021 premiership, with the club stating a need for 'a new voice' despite his recent success and strong player relationships. The Demons were sitting 12th on the ladder and set to miss finals for a second consecutive year, following a period of poor performance and off-field controversies involving both Goodwin and players. Goodwin, under pressure from a string of losses and scrutiny over alleged behavioral issues, said he hopes to coach again but will take time off after nine years in charge. Players, such as Ed Langdon, expressed shock and questioned the board’s justification, highlighting support for Goodwin. Assistant coach Troy Chaplin will serve as interim head coach while the club searches for a permanent replacement amid speculation about potential candidates. Goodwin will receive a payout for the remainder of his contract, which runs through 2026.
