British Columbia Approves FortisBC $1.14B Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion

The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) has approved FortisBC Energy Inc.'s application for the Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion Project, which involves constructing a new, larger liquefied natural gas storage tank at the Tilbury facility in Delta to replace a 56-year-old tank. This expansion aims to ensure a reliable and resilient natural gas supply for British Columbians, particularly during peak demand periods and potential supply disruptions, by reserving two-thirds of the new tank's capacity as emergency backup. The project, estimated to cost approximately $1.14 billion and expected to be operational by 2030, underwent a transparent public review process involving submissions from multiple interveners and public feedback, confirming its alignment with the public interest. FortisBC has committed that the new tank will be used exclusively for local natural gas supply, not for LNG exports or marine fueling, with any future changes requiring further regulatory approval. This initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen B.C.'s energy system resilience, replacing aging infrastructure and addressing vulnerabilities related to dependence on a single pipeline for most of the natural gas supply. Separately, in Glen Carbon, Illinois, trustees approved a plan for Glen Carbon Mini Storage to expand its facility by adding two buildings without needing rezoning or utility upgrades, highlighting ongoing local infrastructure development.
