Philippines President Denies Involvement in Duterte Impeachment

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin emphasized Marcos' previous remarks that pursuing impeachment would be a waste of time and would not benefit the Filipino people. The complaint, which alleges corruption and misuse of funds linked to Duterte's office, was filed by 16 individuals and endorsed by Akbayan Party-list Representative Perci Cendaña. Senate President Chiz Escudero urged senators to remain impartial amid potentially divisive proceedings. While Marcos' allies control over 80% of the House, the success of the impeachment effort hinges on garnering support from the Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required for trial. Duterte's controversies include accusations of budget mismanagement and threats made against Marcos, further complicating the political landscape.
