Kennedy Expressway Lanes Reopen After Major $170M Bridge Rehabilitation

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced significant progress in the Kennedy Expressway Bridge Rehabilitation Project, with 70% of this year's work completed and the reopening of all outbound lanes from Pulaski Road to the Edens junction expected by August 29. This $169 million project, ongoing for three years, includes the rehabilitation of 36 bridges and upgrades to the expressway from Ohio Street to the Edens junction, with inbound lanes completed in 2023 and express lanes finished last season. To facilitate the final stages, overnight lane reductions and ramp closures will occur, including closures of the outbound ramp to Diversey Avenue and the Fullerton Avenue slip ramp to Western Avenue, expected to last about two weeks. Drivers are advised to expect delays, follow traffic signs, and allow extra travel time during these closures. Meanwhile, other states are also completing emergency and routine repairs on key routes, such as the reopening of the Fishing Creek Bridge westbound lanes in Kentucky after emergency deck repairs and the reopening of both lanes on U.S. Highway 101 near Kalaloch after culvert and erosion repairs. These infrastructure efforts reflect ongoing commitments to improve traffic flow and safety across multiple regions.
