Lufthansa Acquires 41 Percent Stake in ITA Airways

Lufthansa Group has acquired a 41% stake in ITA Airways, marking a significant expansion in its European operations. The €325 million investment, approved by European competition authorities, positions ITA as Lufthansa's fifth airline, enhancing connectivity and service offerings. The Italian government retains a 59% share, with Lufthansa aiming for full ownership in the future under an agreed price of €829 million. This acquisition allows Lufthansa to strengthen its presence in Italy, its second-largest international market, and includes plans for joint operations and loyalty program integration. ITA's leadership has also transitioned, with Jörg Eberhart appointed as CEO. The deal is structured to comply with EU regulations, including measures to limit Lufthansa's market power in Italy.
