Alex Ovechkin Out Week-to-Week With Injury
The Washington Capitals announced that captain Alex Ovechkin is week-to-week with a lower-leg injury sustained during Monday's 6-2 victory against the Utah Hockey Club. The injury occurred in the third period after a knee-on-knee collision with Utah's Jack McBain, forcing Ovechkin to leave the game after scoring two goals, which brought his season total to a league-leading 15. With 868 career goals, Ovechkin is now 26 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 894. This injury interrupts Ovechkin's chase for Gretzky's record and comes as he has been having one of the best scoring starts of his career at age 39. The Capitals, currently leading the Metropolitan Division, will host the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. Ovechkin's condition will be further evaluated by team physicians in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
