ITV plans 'soap power hour' for Emmerdale, Coronation Street

Starting January 2026, ITV will implement a new schedule for its popular soaps, Coronation Street and Emmerdale, reducing their weekly episodes from six to five, each airing for 30 minutes. This change, termed a 'soap power hour', aims to make the shows more 'streaming-friendly' and is in response to evolving viewer habits and declining ratings. Fans speculate that the reduction in episodes could lead to a significant crossover event between the two soaps, which has excited many viewers. ITV's Managing Director Kevin Lygo emphasized that the new format is viewer-led and intended to enhance storytelling pace. Additionally, the adjusted schedule will prevent clashes with EastEnders, allowing audiences to watch all three soaps without overlap. However, cast members have expressed concern that this shift may lead to reduced engagement and a diminished sense of 'event TV'.
