Egypt Opens Grand Museum with 100,000 Artefacts

Egypt officially opened the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Giza pyramids on November 1, 2025, unveiling what officials call the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation. The 500,000-square-metre complex houses more than 100,000 artefacts — about half on public display — and, for the first time, presents the complete Tutankhamun collection of roughly 6,000 items, including his golden mask and chariots. The launch was staged as a lavish audiovisual spectacle with drones, lasers, holograms and musical performances and was attended by dozens of international delegations, including monarchs and heads of state. President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi called the GEM “Egypt’s gift to humanity,” describing it as a centre for culture, diplomacy and a key pillar to revive tourism and the economy. Built with international backing including Japanese support and at about a $1 billion investment, the GEM features cutting‑edge exhibition technology, virtual‑reality exhibits, a scientific restoration centre and views toward the pyramids.
