Costco Sued for $14M Over Store Injury

Sadie Novotny, a California psychologist, is suing Costco for over $14 million after a heavy liquor cabinet display with thin legs allegedly fell on her at a Santa Rosa store in March, resulting in multiple serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. The lawsuit, initially filed in California Superior Court and later moved to federal court, claims the cabinet was dangerously placed on a worn wooden pallet, creating an unstable hazard. Novotny accuses Costco of negligence in merchandise management and employee supervision. She is seeking damages for pain, suffering, emotional distress, medical expenses, and lost future earnings. Legal analysts say the case could set a precedent for big-box store liability related to customer safety and display practices. Costco has not issued a public statement, and a court hearing is scheduled for September.
