CSU Slightly Lowers 2025 Hurricane Season Forecast
Colorado State University has revised its 2025 Atlantic hurricane season outlook, now predicting a slightly above-normal season with 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes, citing high Caribbean wind shear as the reason for the slight downgrade. The likelihood of major hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. and Caribbean remains above average, with Florida most at risk. Neutral ENSO conditions and warmer-than-average Atlantic sea surface temperatures may still support increased storm activity. Advances in satellite technology, particularly NOAA’s GOES series, have improved hurricane tracking and forecasting accuracy over the past 50 years. Seasonal shifts in ocean temperatures, wind shear, and Saharan dust continue to influence hurricane development throughout summer and fall. Residents in vulnerable regions, especially Florida, are urged to remain vigilant as the season continues.
