Former Australia Captain Will Genia Retires Aged 37
Will Genia, one of the most decorated Australian rugby players, has announced his retirement at 37, concluding a nearly two-decade career highlighted by 110 international appearances, making him the seventh-most capped Wallaby. He captained the Wallabies on three occasions, represented Australia in three Rugby World Cups, and earned significant accolades including the Pilecki Medal twice and a Super Rugby title with the Queensland Reds. Genia's career also included stints with the Melbourne Rebels, Stade Français, and Japanese side Kintetsu Liners, where he finished his playing career. He expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, and fans in his retirement announcement on Instagram and plans to transition into a skills coaching role at Kintetsu alongside teammate Quade Cooper. Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh praised Genia as a world-class number nine who starred on rugby's biggest stages and played a key role in memorable matches of his generation. Genia's achievements also include being nominated for the 2011 IRB Player of the Year and playing in the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.
