Introduced by her brother-in-law, who challenged her to impress him, Sunita took on the challenge, leading to a three-year courtship before their marriage in 1987. Sunita recalled how Govinda was perceived as a simple man from Virar who was hard to impress, which intrigued her. She declined the lead role in Govinda's debut film, Tan-Badan, due to the workload, and the role went to Khushbu Sundar instead.
