Joliet Police Sergeant Killed in Beecher Crash

Sergeant Hollis Weller, a 20-year veteran of the Joliet Police Department, was killed in a three-vehicle crash while off duty on May 16, 2025, around 11:45 a.m. in Beecher, southeastern Will County, at Illinois Route 1 and Eagle Lake Road. The crash involved a commercial motor vehicle, a pickup truck, and a passenger vehicle. Weller, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene, and another individual was injured and hospitalized. Weller had recently celebrated his 20th anniversary with the department, was promoted to sergeant in July 2020, and served in the Traffic Unit. He was highly respected, having received numerous awards including the Award for Heroism in 2015, and is survived by his wife and three children. The Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
