Ugandan Olympic Runner Rebecca Cheptegei Dies

Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, has tragically died from severe burns sustained in an arson attack by her partner, Dickson Ndiema. Cheptegei, who was treated for 80% burns at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, succumbed to her injuries shortly after the incident, which occurred during a domestic dispute over land. Ndiema allegedly poured petrol on Cheptegei and set her ablaze; he also suffered burns and is under investigation for attempted murder. The couple had been heard arguing prior to the attack, with witnesses stating that one of Cheptegei's daughters was present and attempted to intervene. This incident raises concerns about violence against women in Kenya, where statistics indicate a significant prevalence of physical abuse. Cheptegei had recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing 44th in the marathon.
