Florida Converts Truck Weigh Stations into ICE Checkpoints after Deadly Crash

Following a deadly August 12 crash on the Florida Turnpike involving Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant truck driver who made an illegal U-turn killing three people, Florida authorities have announced that all state truck weigh stations will now also function as federal immigration checkpoints. State Attorney General James Uthmeier criticized states like California and Washington for issuing commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) to Singh despite his failing English proficiency and road sign tests, urging the federal government to revoke their CDL program authority and related funding. The move involves a partnership between federal agencies and Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to screen commercial drivers' immigration status at weigh stations along major highways, with plans to add new stations and advanced X-ray technology. Singh had multiple licenses from sanctuary states and was deported from California to Florida to stand trial on charges including vehicular homicide and immigration violations.
