Bringing Them Home report marks 26th anniversary, highlights ongoing Indigenous child removals
The Manzanita School's eighth-grade class recently visited the California Museum in Sacramento to explore the exhibit 'Uprooted: An American Story,' which highlights the experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II. This visit followed their reading of historical fiction about the Holocaust and Japanese internment, including 'Farewell to Manzanar.' The exhibit aimed to educate students about the forced relocation and internment of 120,000 people of Japanese descent, many of whom were American citizens, after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 in 1942. Students learned about the harsh conditions faced by families in internment camps, where they were confined behind barbed wire and housed in inadequate structures. The visit reinforced the importance of remembering history to prevent the repetition of past injustices. Through personal stories shared by docents, students gained a deeper understanding of this significant chapter in American history.
