Wildfire Forces Evacuations on Crete

A firefighting team from Hungary is currently assisting in North Macedonia to combat wildfires affecting the Jasen Reserve and nearby homes, utilizing drones and spark arresters for effective firefighting efforts. Meanwhile, on the Greek island of Crete, over 200 firefighters are battling a significant wildfire that has led to evacuations in the village of Aghia Paraskevi, with additional villages on alert. This summer, Greece has faced its highest fire risk in two decades, with more than 2,000 wildfires reported, fueled by dry conditions stemming from a mild winter and hot spring. Efforts to control the flames have included water-dropping aircraft and specialized firefighting units, but high winds continue to challenge containment efforts. Authorities in both countries emphasize the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in the face of these ongoing wildfires.
