'Japanese First' Party Gains Support, Challenges Japan's Opposition Government
Japan's upstart political party Sanseito, campaigning under a 'Japanese First' slogan, is gaining traction ahead of the July upper house election by promoting anti-immigrant rhetoric and tapping into voter dissatisfaction with the economy and rising living costs. The party, which emerged on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic and has spread conspiracy theories, calls for immigration restrictions and laws to prevent foreigners from buying Japanese companies or land, drawing comparisons to U.S. President Donald Trump's political style. Led by Sohei Kamiya, a former teacher and supermarket manager, Sanseito appeals to conservative voters alienated by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's minority government and cooperation with centrist parties. Though polls suggest Sanseito may win only 10 to 17 of the 125 seats contested, it is eroding support for the longtime ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner Komeito. The party's rise is also marked by controversy, including reports of a candidate's interview with Russian state-owned media, raising suspicions of foreign interference. Sanseito capitalizes on a fast-aging population, record foreign-born residents, and inflation-driven frustrations, positioning itself as a significant challenger to the LDP's dominance in Japanese politics.
