Boeing 777-9 Completes Fifth Test Flight, Certification Nears
Boeing has reached a significant milestone with the fifth Boeing 777-9 aircraft completing its maiden flight after nearly five years, marking progress in the long-delayed 777X program. The test flight lasted two hours and 27 minutes and took place at Paine Field, with the aircraft, registered as N2007L, now undergoing high-intensity radiated field (HIRF) testing to evaluate its systems against electromagnetic interference. Originally slated for entry into service in 2020, the 777-9's certification has faced multiple setbacks due to production, engine, and regulatory challenges, pushing the expected service entry to 2026. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently approved Boeing to proceed to the fourth phase of certification, including system demonstrations critical for final approval. Singapore Airlines is slated to be among the first operators to receive the 777-9 after certification, which remains on track despite Boeing's financial struggles and increased government oversight. This development represents the first positive progress in years for the 777X, the newest and largest iteration of the 777 family, which is key for Boeing's future in long-haul, fuel-efficient aircraft.
