Cambodia-Thailand Border Talks Begin in Malaysia

Senior officials from Cambodia and Thailand have begun preparatory talks in Kuala Lumpur ahead of a crucial General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, seeking to ease the worst border tensions in decades that have resulted in over 40 deaths and numerous injuries. The meeting, hosted by Malaysia as ASEAN chair, follows a July 28 ceasefire and will include US and Chinese representatives. ASEAN has sent a military observer group to monitor the ceasefire in the affected provinces, signaling a strong regional push for stability. Thailand's delegation is led by Deputy Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit, who is seeking National Security Council approval before the final ministerial talks. Despite the ceasefire, both countries continue to exchange accusations, highlighting the fragility of the current truce. Malaysia is facilitating the process through direct communication and logistical support for the GBC meeting.
