Fernando Mendoza Emerges as Heisman Contender
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza has vaulted into the national Heisman conversation as odds rise amid miscues by other contenders, including Miami’s Carson Beck. He delivered a signature performance in Indiana’s 38-13 win over Michigan State, throwing for 332 yards and four touchdowns as a rain-soaked student section chanted “Heis-Mendoza.” Through seven games Mendoza has about 1,423 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, two interceptions and roughly a 71% completion rate, helping Indiana to a 7-0 start and a top-3 national ranking. Coach Curt Cignetti called Mendoza the most prepared player he’s ever coached, citing his pocket progress, processing and character, and Mendoza’s play has also boosted his draft stock. Mendoza remains modest, deflecting Heisman talk to teammates and focusing on the team’s upcoming matchup with UCLA.
