Over 1 Million Flee Sudan Conflict to South Sudan: UN

The United Nations reports that over one million people have fled the ongoing war in Sudan to seek refuge in neighboring South Sudan, highlighting a significant humanitarian crisis. Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, tens of thousands have died, and more than 12 million have been displaced. The majority of those crossing into South Sudan are South Sudanese nationals who had previously fled their own civil war. The humanitarian situation in South Sudan is critical, with resources like healthcare and shelter stretched beyond capacity, as two transit centers in Renk County have seen populations soar from 5,000 to over 16,000. The UN has called for increased support for both the displaced individuals and the communities hosting them. Additionally, violence has escalated in South Sudan, resulting in the deaths of 16 Sudanese nationals during anti-Sudanese protests last week.
