Paraguay Plans Consulate in Moroccan Sahara Recognizing Sovereignty

Paraguay has announced plans to open a Consulate General in the Moroccan Sahara, reaffirming its recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory and supporting Morocco's 2007 autonomy initiative as the sole credible solution to the regional conflict. This diplomatic move follows Paraguay's 2014 withdrawal of recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, aligned with Morocco's ongoing efforts to secure Latin American support for its territorial claims. The Paraguayan foreign minister emphasized the strategic nature of this partnership, highlighting Paraguay as a gateway to Latin America and Mercosur, while Morocco offers access to Africa and the Gulf. The two countries also aim to expand cooperation in trade, investment, education, and security, with talks underway for a trade agreement between Morocco and Mercosur, which Paraguay will chair. Morocco views Paraguay as a loyal ally and is ready to support its development efforts, with Paraguay's president planning a visit to Morocco in early 2026. This development underscores Morocco's growing international backing, with 29 countries having established consulates in Western Sahara to bolster Moroccan sovereignty claims, despite ongoing disputes involving the Algeria-backed Polisario Front and differing European Union stances.
