Which? has named Whitby the UK’s best-value seaside town, awarding it five stars for food and accommodation and citing attractions such as Whitby Abbey, the 199 Steps and the Whitby Goth Weekend. Charmouth Beach on the Jurassic Coast is highlighted as a top winter walking and fossil-hunting destination, with East and West Beach areas, a Heritage Centre, accessible facilities, parking, bus links and seasonal dog rules. The historic Sussex town of Rye is recommended as a winter getaway for its cobbled lanes, Tudor architecture and the quieter atmosphere around Mermaid Street and the Mermaid Inn. In the US, the secluded Kindred Spirit mailbox on Bird Island Reserve (Sunset Beach, NC) is noted as a 1.5-mile walk from the nearest access with a visitors’ journal and literary ties, while Sicily remains a warm November option with daytime highs near 20°C, cheap flights from about £20 and attractions including Palermo, Catania, Syracuse and Mount Etna.
