Scotland Implements Safe Access Zones for Abortion

New legislation establishing Safe Access Zones around abortion clinics in Scotland has come into force, making it illegal to protest, distribute leaflets, or engage in any form of harassment within 200 meters of designated facilities. This law aims to protect women's rights to access abortion services without intimidation, following increasing concerns over aggressive protests outside clinics. Violators of the law could face fines up to £10,000 or potentially unlimited fines for serious breaches, with enforcement overseen by Police Scotland. The legislation, backed overwhelmingly by MSPs, was initiated by Green MSP Gillian Mackay and supported by advocacy groups like Back Off Scotland. Public Health Minister Jenni Minto emphasized that the law is a safeguard for women's health rather than a restriction on free speech. Despite the enactment of the law, some anti-abortion groups have indicated plans to continue protests, raising concerns about future compliance.
