UK Introduces Tobacco and Vapes Bill

The UK government is introducing the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which aims to create the first 'smoke-free generation' by implementing a smoking ban in children's playgrounds, outside schools, and hospitals, while excluding pub gardens. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the need for 'bold action' to prevent children from getting hooked on nicotine and to protect vulnerable populations from second-hand smoke. The legislation will prohibit the sale of tobacco to anyone currently aged 15 or younger and will also ban disposable vapes starting June 1, 2025. Furthermore, there will be restrictions on vaping advertisements, flavors, and packaging to reduce their appeal to youth. The bill has garnered support from various sectors, although it faced backlash regarding the exclusion of pub gardens from the smoking ban. Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty highlighted the importance of protecting children and families from the harms of smoking and vaping.
