Officer Rivera Killed by Accidental Police Gunfire
Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera, 36, was accidentally shot and killed by her partner during a confrontation with an armed suspect on the South Side late Thursday night. Rivera and her tactical team were pursuing a suspect into an apartment when they were confronted by another individual with a rifle, and only Rivera's partner discharged a weapon, unintentionally striking Rivera in the back. During her emergency transport to the hospital, the police vehicle malfunctioned and caught fire, requiring her transfer to another vehicle. Rivera, a four-year department veteran and single mother, later died at the hospital. Several suspects, including one who allegedly pointed a rifle at officers, remain in custody, and multiple firearms were recovered at the scene. Authorities are actively investigating the incident, including reviewing body-worn camera footage.
