Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Play 'Purpose' Set for Broadway

The Broadway transfer of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' play "Purpose" is set to premiere at the Helen Hayes Theater, with previews starting on February 25, 2025, and an official opening on March 17. Directed by Phylicia Rashad in her Broadway debut, the cast features LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Kara Young, Harry Lennix, Jon Michael Hill, Glenn Davis, and Alana Arenas, many of whom reprise their roles from the play's world premiere at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre. The storyline revolves around the influential Jasper family, whose secrets and legacies are brought to light when the youngest son returns home with an unexpected guest. The play is described as a spirited family drama that addresses themes of faith and political heritage within the Black American community. Tickets are currently on sale as the production runs through July 6, 2025. The creative team includes scenic design by Todd Rosenthal and costume design by Dede M. Ayite.
