EU Offers €30 Million Aid to Moldova's Energy Crisis

The European Union has proposed a €30 million emergency assistance package to support the Republic of Moldova amid an energy crisis exacerbated by Gazprom's halt of gas supplies. This funding aims to facilitate the purchase and transport of natural gas to the Transnistrian region, ensuring electricity and heating for over 350,000 residents until February 10, 2025. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that it is unacceptable for people to lack basic services in the winter. Alongside this immediate aid, the EU plans to provide additional financial support to mitigate social impacts and promote long-term energy resilience in Moldova. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean confirmed the collaboration with the EU, highlighting the goal to end the humanitarian crisis and bolster the energy sector. The assistance comes as Moldova seeks to diversify away from reliance on Russian gas, with ongoing efforts to secure alternative supplies.
