NYPD Fatally Shoots Knife-Wielding Man in Queens

NYPD officers fatally shot a 61-year-old man wielding a 14-inch knife in Astoria, Queens, after he advanced towards them despite multiple commands to drop the weapon. The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. following several 911 calls reporting a man acting erratically. Officers attempted to subdue him using Tasers, which were ineffective, prompting them to open fire when he lunged at them. The man, who had two previous mental health-related incidents with the NYPD, was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The situation was captured on body-worn and surveillance cameras, and an investigation is ongoing, including why the Tasers failed to work. Officers involved were uninjured but underwent evaluation for ringing in their ears.
