Two Michigan Men Presumed Drowned After Jumping From Boats in Lake Erie, Lake Ann

Two separate drowning incidents occurred in Michigan lakes over the weekend involving men who jumped from boats and subsequently went underwater. In Benzie County, 61-year-old Peter Bensinger drowned after jumping into Lake Ann when high winds caused his boat to drift away; despite a multi-agency search, his body was recovered the following day. In Monroe County, 23-year-old Hussein Afi Hassoun of Dearborn is presumed drowned after struggling in Lake Erie near Sterling State Park; he was swimming with others from a boat but was not wearing a life jacket and went underwater, leading to an extensive search involving several local and federal agencies that was temporarily suspended due to unsafe wave conditions. Hassoun has not been located, and authorities continue to seek information from the public to aid in the search. Both incidents highlight the dangers of swimming from boats without life jackets and the challenges posed by weather and water conditions during rescue efforts.
