The incident occurred at Charlotte's Bar during a quiet night out with the film's producers, with McAvoy's back turned to the assailant, who was being escorted out for intoxication. McAvoy attempted to de-escalate the situation and remained uninjured; he stayed at the bar afterward and even laughed off the incident. The film tells the true story of Silibil N’ Brains, a Scottish rap duo who pretended to be Americans to secure a record deal, and is based on Gavin Bain’s memoir.
