Helicopter Crash Kills Pilot in Cairns

A stolen helicopter crashed onto the roof of the DoubleTree by Hilton in Cairns, Australia, around 1:50 a.m. local time, resulting in the death of the pilot, who was the sole occupant. Approximately 400 hotel guests were evacuated as flames engulfed the aircraft, which was confirmed to be on an unauthorized flight by its owner, Nautilus Aviation. Witnesses reported a loud explosion-like sound when the helicopter hit, with debris landing in the hotel pool and surrounding areas. Two guests were hospitalized for smoke inhalation but have since been discharged. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the flight, including whether the pilot held a valid license. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has also dispatched a team to the scene for further investigation.
