Pa. Democratic Chair Sen. Sharif Street Steps Down Amid 2026 Congressional Run

State Senator Sharif Street announced he will step down as Chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party to focus on his congressional campaign for the 3rd District seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans. Street, who made history as the first Black man and Muslim to chair the state party since 2022, expressed pride in building a more inclusive and energized Democratic coalition across Pennsylvania. His resignation follows concerns from Democratic leaders including Gov. Josh Shapiro and DNC Chairman Ken Martin about the challenges of simultaneously leading the party and running for Congress. Street plans to endorse former Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale as his successor, with the party’s special election scheduled for September 6. DePasquale, a well-regarded Democrat and former statehouse member, has the backing of key figures such as Philadelphia Committee Chair Bob Brady and Governor Shapiro. Street emphasized his commitment to continue fighting for Pennsylvania voters through his congressional bid, aiming to flip seats and oppose the MAGA agenda.
